Driver killed and at least 15 injured in derailment near Barcelona

A commuter train derailed near Barcelona on Tuesday after a retaining wall collapsed onto the tracks, killing the driver and injuring all 37 passengers on board, Spanish emergency services said.

The crash occurred just two days after a train collision in southern Spain that killed at least 42 people.

Tuesday’s incident occurred between the Sant Sadurni d’Anoia and Gelida stations, about 35 minutes outside Barcelona. Two people remain in critical condition, RTVE reported, citing medical officials. Several rail lines in Catalonia were closed earlier due to heavy rain.

“All necessary resources are being mobilized to guarantee the safety of those affected,” Catalonia’s acting president, Albert Dalmau Miranda, wrote on X.

On Sunday, two high-speed trains collided near Adamuz in Spain’s southern Córdoba region. The death toll rose to 42 on Tuesday, with one person still listed as unaccounted for. The investigators have ruled out sabotage and are reportedly focusing on a 30-centimeter gap between one of the rails and possible deterioration of the weld.

Inigo Barron, the head of Spain’s Railway Accident Investigation Commission, told the media that the disaster did not appear to be the result of human error or problems with the signals.
