Mozambican business community seeks meeting with government regarding kidnappings

The Confederation of Economic Associations (CTA) in Mozambique is seeking a meeting with the government to discuss the recent spate of kidnappings before making an official statement on the matter. The CTA has postponed, for the second time in two days, a press conference initially called to address the new wave of kidnappings impacting Mozambican cities.

Mozambican business community seeks meeting with government regarding kidnappings

In statements to the international press, a source from the organization mentioned that the postponement was due to the absence of a meeting with the government, which was intended to discuss the impact of such crimes on the business environment and the economy.

"It's a routine meeting with the government, but given the recent developments, the impact of kidnappings on the business climate and the economy was to be discussed," the source said.

The meeting with the executive is crucial for the business community to express its stance. The CTA has already publicly spoken about the repercussions that kidnappings are having on investments and the country's economy. In November, the organization advocated for "more severe" prison sentences against kidnappers, without the possibility of bail, to curb these crimes.

On Saturday, a Mozambican businessman, who was the first known victim of kidnapping in Mozambique in 2011, was kidnapped again in Maputo. The incident involved four men who fired several shots in public, as reported by TORRE.News
