Venâncio Mondlane confirms presidential candidacy after leaving Renamo

Venâncio Mondlane, who was the head of the list for the city of Maputo in the 2023 municipal elections for Renamo, will submit his candidacy for President of the Republic as an independent next Thursday, after resigning from his position as a Member of Parliament in the Assembly of the Republic and his membership in Renamo yesterday afternoon (03).

Mondlane will present his candidacy and the 10,000 signatures to the Constitutional Council, the minimum requirement for an independent candidate in the general elections on 9 October.

"As a result of a profound awareness of the need to seek more efficient means and a conducive political atmosphere to continue his fight in defence of full democracy," reads the resignation document that TORRE.News accessed.

Today, Raul Novinte, former mayor of Nacala, also resigned his membership in Renamo, explaining that the decision was made considering his personal and professional circumstances.

Novinte's resignation was also made public through a document circulating on social media since this morning, a few days after he announced that he would join Venâncio Mondlane in working towards the upcoming elections.
