Mozambique's internet tariffs: Operators yet to announce dates for unlimited and bonus packages

The telecommunications operators in the country still do not have precise dates for the cancellation of the new tariffs and the resumption of bonus services and unlimited internet packages. The suspension of the new tariffs was announced yesterday (04) by the INCM, the telecommunications regulatory body, following a government recommendation.

In a conversation with TORRE.News, the communications department of Tmcel stated that they do not know exactly when the unlimited bonus services will be resumed, assuring that for now, meetings are scheduled to discuss the matter. These meetings are expected to finalise technical procedures, as was the case when the new tariffs were introduced, which are currently in force despite strong opposition from society.

According to a well-positioned source, TORRE.News knows that Movitel also does not have dates for when the old tariffs will be reinstated. In the same context, we unsuccessfully tried to hear from the management of Vodacom Mozambique on the matter.

The government’s recommendation to suspend the new tariffs was announced by the Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications, Amilton Alissone, after the conclusion of the 17th ordinary session of the Council of Ministers.

During the implementation of the current tariffs, which came into effect on 4 May, the operators took 72 hours (three days) to comply with the decree, from the date of the decision, 1 May, to the date of implementation, 4 May.

While the return of unlimited packages is not realised, Mozambicans remain subject to the tariffs considered unbearable, despite the approval from both the government and the regulatory body for the suspension of the new tariffs.
