Catupa is in Macomia district and is regarded as the most important strategic stronghold of the islamists, following the fall of the Siri 1 and Siri 2 bases last year.

Speaking to reporters after chairing an extraordinary meeting of the Provincial Executive Council, Nyusi said that it was the Mozambican forces which took Catupa, while their allies from Rwanda and the SADC Mission in Mozambique held the outskirts of the base.

Nyusi also said there was a leadership struggle under way among the jihadists, particularly between Tanzanians and Mozambicans.

But the terrorists have continued to launch raids elsewhere in Macomia. According to a report in Friday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Carta de Mocambique”, a terrorist gang attacked Nkoe village in the Chai administrative post on Tuesday night, burning down 100 houses and seriously injuring three people.
