The victims were farmers from the village of Mangano de Rovuma. Because of jihadist raids, the families of these farmers had fled to the district capital, Nangade town. But the farmers went back to their fields on Saturday to harvest foodstuffs.

The villagers are facing hunger because humanitarian organisations are no longer providing them with food aid. The last time they received food was in May, when the Cabo Delgado provincial governor, Valige Tuabo, and the Secretary of State for the province, Antonio Supeia, were visiting Nangade. Even so, there was no enough food to cover all the displaced households in Nangade.

“Carta de Mocambique” also reported that last Thursday terrorists burnt down dozens of houses in Mapate village, in Muidumbe district. The raiders burnt the villagers’ property, including their food reserves, thus threatening a near immediate hunger crisis.

Villagers fled into the bush, and there was no response from the local militia, supposedly because they were heavily outnumbered.

Mozambican and Rwandan troops were dispatched to Mapate, but by the time they arrived, the terrorists had made their getaway, apparently crossing the Messalo river into Macomia district.
