Mocímboa da Praia Faces New Wave of Attacks; Government Remains Silent

This escalation in terrorist activities coincides with a period where national and foreign troops report significant progress in the northern operational theatre in combating this phenomenon.

In this context, the French multinational oil and gas company Total Energies is preparing to return to its logistical base in Afungi to resume the Mozambique LNG project, previously halted due to security concerns.

Recently, national media reported a terrorist attack in the village of Chibanga, in the district of Mocímboa da Praia, which claimed the lives of at least five people.

Among those killed by the terrorists was a health promoter affiliated with Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), a humanitarian organization that has been providing medical assistance in Cabo Delgado since 2019.

In a statement released on Sunday, Médecins Sans Frontières in Cabo Delgado mourned the loss of the five individuals but reaffirmed their commitment to continue providing medical and humanitarian assistance to families affected by terrorism.

In addition to this attack, there have been reports of another group of terrorists arriving by canoe last Thursday at Tembuze Island, also in Cabo Delgado. They terrorized fishermen and looted trade goods and other belongings of the local populace.

Mocímboa da Praia district was the first target of the terrorists on October 5, 2017, with insurgents subsequently attacking other areas in the province.

In total, around 62,000 people, nearly the entire population, have fled the coastal town due to the conflict that began six years ago, particularly following mass exoduses after the intensification of insurgent activities in June 2020.
