Transparency International also noted that Mozambique has moved to 147th place out of 180 in the Corruption Perceptions Index, scoring 25 points on a scale that ranges from zero to 100. Over the last five years, Mozambique has seen a decline of one point, and over the past 11 years, it has lost six points.

The CPI, established by Transparency International in 1995, has since been a benchmark in analyzing the phenomenon of corruption based on the perceptions of experts and business executives regarding the levels of corruption in the public sector. It is a composite index, meaning it is the result of combining sources of corruption analysis developed by other independent organizations, and it ranks 180 countries and territories from zero (perceived as highly corrupt) to 100 points (very transparent).

In 2012, the organization revised the methodology used to construct the index to allow for the comparison of scores from one year to the next.
