In a Tuesday press release, MPDC says the new cranes “mark a significant step in improving operational efficiency”.

These are Liebherr LHM 550 cranes of the latest generation and they are each capable of handling 144 tonnes. They bring the total number of mobile cranes in the port to six. MPDC says this “opens the path to a greater capacity in handling general cargo and bulk cargo”.

At the same time, additional equipment to support the handling of cargo was acquired, such as tipplers and trailers, amounting to a total investment of 25.5 million dollars.

MPDC received its first pair of mobile port cranes in 2015, followed by a second pair in 2018.

“These cranes have been fundamental for cargo handling operations in the port”, said the MPDC release. “They are currently responsible for 75 per cent of the monthly movement of cargo in the port”.

With the two new cranes, MPDC, it says “is well equipped to handle larger amounts of cargo, and to attend to larger ships”.

MPDC is positioning the cranes at quays 6, 7 and 9, which were rehabilitated and expanded in 2022, and where the depth of the water is between 15.2 and 16 metres.
