Terrorists entering via Niassa and Tete

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has warned that terrorist groups are trying to make their way to Cabo Delgado province, via the neighbouring provinces of Niassa or Tete, sometimes with the connivance of truck drivers.

Speaking on Friday, during the inauguration of a solar power station in Maravia district, in Tete, Nyusi called for more vigilance, warning that the terrorists are trying to recruit young people to their ranks across the country.

He noted that Tete province borders on Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Now, rather than infiltrating from Tanzania in the north, “the terrorists are entering via Niassa and Tete”, Nyusi said. “They travel in trucks to go and join the bandits”.

The drivers, he added, are quite willing to take their passengers to Cabo Delgado. “People who have vehicles and carry people whom they don’t know had better stop”, he warned.

If anyone asks for a lift, the driver should find out who they are and check their identity documents. The driver should know who is in his vehicle and where they are going.

“There’s nothing wrong with asking if he has an identity card. If he shows his identity, then give him a lift”, said Nyusi. “But now you are carrying people without knowing who they are, so that they can go and kill others. This cannot continue”.

He added that the terrorists are now running out of food. “They’re dying of hunger every day, and that’s why some of them are fleeing”, said the President.
