Venâncio Mondlane announces candidacy for Renamo presidency with support from Raúl Novinte

The announcement was made during a visit to Nacala-Porto, in solidarity with the local mayor, who had recently completed a 30-day house arrest for allegedly inciting violence during protests against electoral fraud.

Mondlane was assertive in declaring his candidacy, highlighting his readiness and determination. His statement was backed by Nacala-Porto's mayor, Raúl Novinte, who expressed popular support for Mondlane and his aspiration to lead Renamo.

This announcement marks a significant moment in Mozambican politics, as Venâncio Mondlane is the first within Renamo to publicly challenge the current leadership. Previously, Renamo's spokesperson José Manteigas had stated that the current party president, Ossufo Momade, was the sole figure with the right profile to run for the Presidency of the Republic.

Historically, the leader of Renamo is also the party's candidate for the country's presidency. Therefore, Mondlane's announcement not only challenges Renamo's current leadership but also introduces a new dynamic in Mozambique's political landscape ahead of upcoming elections.

This development also highlights the current tension and rivalry within Renamo, suggesting that the upcoming elections will be a fertile ground for intense and unpredictable political competition. Mozambican politics continues to surprise, and the months ahead promise significant importance and challenges for all involved parties.

In Nacala-Porto, alongside local mayor Raúl Novinte, Mondlane confidently affirmed his candidacy for the Renamo presidency. “I want to announce openly, without fear, without shaking, without looking left or right, that I, Venâncio Mondlane, a senior member of the party, am ready to advance as a candidate for the presidency of Renamo at the next Congress,” he declared in a meeting with Renamo members.

Before Mondlane's statements, Nacala-Porto's mayor Novinte expressed his support, saying, “The people support you. The people love you. The people want you to be the president of Renamo.”

Venâncio Mondlane's announcement of his candidacy for the Renamo presidency can be seen as both a challenge to Ossufo Momade and a confirmation of the hostile environment within Renamo as it prepares for the upcoming electoral contests.
