Carige takes center stage and tackles the country’s structural issues
During the celebrations marking the 117th anniversary of Beira's elevation to city status, Albano Carige, the city's mayor and a member of the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM), delivered a speech that went beyond local concerns, sharply criticizing the central government for its handling of the country's structural issues, particularly the growing wave of kidnappings.
Carige used the occasion to highlight the negative impact of these kidnappings on the national economy, comparing the situation to one where "kidnappers choose their victims as if they were picking chickens from a coop." This pointed critique directly targeted the ruling party, Frelimo, and underscored the increasing perception of insecurity in the country.
While MDM leader Lutero Simango has maintained a more subdued profile, Carige has emerged as a vocal figure within the party, reigniting political debate and criticizing the government's lack of an effective response to security problems.
In addition to the kidnappings, Carige expressed solidarity with health professionals and magistrates, who have been fighting for their rights in the face of what he considers a persistent denial by the government.
The mayor of Beira also warned of the economic consequences of insecurity, suggesting that the rise in crime and the departure of entrepreneurs from the country are exacerbating unemployment and financial problems.
He concluded his speech with a call for governance based on religious principles, urging the government to place God at the forefront of its decisions to ensure wise and prosperous management of the country.
Critics in Mozambique have suggested that Carige could have been a strong choice to represent the MDM in the upcoming presidential elections on October 9, as opposed to the official candidate, Lutero Simango.
This scenario is similar to the one faced by Renamo, which nominated Ossufo Momade as its candidate—a figure who also faces internal and public scrutiny.
The situation within Renamo was highlighted recently when António Muchanga, a senior member of the party, offered to speak publicly on behalf of Ossufo Momade, indicating perceived weaknesses in Renamo's current leadership and fueling debate about candidate selection on social media and in public opinion.
