Mozambique Extradites Drug Baron to the Netherlands

The extradition of Babatunde Tajudeen Abioye, indicted for engaging in illicit activities within Mozambique, follows a Supreme Court criminal section ruling dated January 20, 2023.

The Ministry of Public Affairs revealed in a press release that Abioye, along with another foreign national and two Mozambican public officials implicated in facilitating the acquisition of forged documents, faced charges of document forgery, use of forged documents, criminal association, passive and active corruption, abuse of office, and money laundering.

The drug baron, sentenced to three years imprisonment in the Netherlands for trafficking illicit drugs and psychotropic substances, had escaped custody and established operations in Mozambique. From his illicit gains, Abioye acquired real estate properties, including three residences and a commercial complex, now seized and reverted to the Mozambican state.

The legal proceedings against Abioye by the Mozambican side will proceed through judicial cooperation with the Dutch state, where he is currently serving his sentence.

This extradition marks a significant achievement in Mozambique's ongoing battle against organized crime, emphasizing the crucial role of international cooperation as highlighted by the Prosecutor-General of the Republic, Beatriz Buchili. During the judicial year opening, Buchili stressed the importance of leveraging both formal and informal international cooperation mechanisms to identify and dismantle international drug trafficking networks operating within Mozambique.

The extradition of Abioye is a testament to Mozambique's dedication to combating drug trafficking and organized crime, showcasing the effectiveness of international collaboration in holding criminals accountable across borders.
