Eni ready to launch Coral Norte platform following success of Coral Sul in Mozambique

Building on the success of the Coral Sul FLNG project, Italian energy giant Eni has reaffirmed its readiness to proceed with a second natural gas extraction platform, Coral Norte, in the deep waters of the Rovuma Basin, Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique. Marica Calabrese, General Manager of Eni Rovuma Basin, confirmed the company’s plans in an interview with Energy Connect.

"After the success of Coral Sul, we’re prepared to launch Coral Norte. Eni has great confidence in this country, and this will mark the beginning of another success story," stated Calabrese, emphasising the company’s optimism in Mozambique’s energy potential.
Following this, Eni and Mozambique’s National Hydrocarbon Company (ENH) signed a new contract for offshore exploration in the Angoche Basin, aiming to leverage Mozambique’s vast energy resources and position the country as a leader in global energy investments.
Calabrese highlighted that, with ongoing infrastructure development and technical expertise, Mozambique is set to play a significant role in meeting the world’s growing energy demand. For Eni, Mozambique’s commitment to energy development makes it a crucial player in the global energy transition, focused on sustainability and low-carbon economic growth.
At the recent COP28 in Dubai, President Filipe Nyusi reaffirmed Mozambique’s $80 billion energy transition strategy, which aims to harness the nation’s renewable resources and establish Mozambique as a sustainable investment destination, providing energy to its people.
Mozambique is expected to continue expanding its energy capacity, with renewable resources set to address rising energy demand as over half of the population remains without electricity access. Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy Carlos Zacarias recently outlined a strategy to drive economic growth through gas reserves, complemented by hydropower, wind, and solar projects.

The country’s energy transition plan rests on four pillars: expanding clean energy, fostering green industrialisation, achieving universal energy access by 2030, and promoting green mobility. These pillars are designed to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and position Mozambique as a model of sustainable development.
In August, Eni and its Area 4 partners, including CNPC, GALP, KOGAS, and ENH, celebrated reaching the production milestone of five million tonnes of LNG from Coral Sul FLNG. This achievement underscores the collaboration and commitment of the teams involved in advancing Mozambique’s energy sector.
