EU state offers air corridor for Putin-Trump summit

Bulgaria would not create hurdles for the planned leaders’ meeting in Budapest, its top diplomat has said

Bulgaria has said it is ready to provide its airspace for Russian President Vladimir Putin to travel to a planned summit with US President Donald Trump in Hungary.

Trump and Putin agreed during a phone call last week to meet in Budapest at an unspecified date to discuss advancing a resolution to the Ukraine conflict, the Kremlin said.

Speaking to national broadcaster BNR on Monday, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev said his country would not create any hurdles. “When efforts are made to achieve peace, and if the condition for that is to hold a meeting, it is most logical to organize such a meeting by all possible means,” he said.

“How could there be a meeting if one side isn’t able to attend?” Georgiev added.

Bulgaria does not share a border with Hungary, but both countries border Serbia, which maintains friendly ties with Russia and refuses to impose sanctions on Moscow.

Hungary is one of the few EU members that does not support the bloc’s diplomatic boycott of Moscow. In June, Budapest announced its withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), which in 2023 issued an arrest warrant for Putin on charges of war crimes. Russia, which is not a party to the ICC, dismissed the warrant as “legally void.”
