Chapo: "I Will be president for all mozambicans and open to dialogue
Mozambique’s newly elected President, Daniel Chapo, made his first public appearance following the official confirmation of his landslide victory, securing 70% of the vote. In his speech, Chapo committed to governing for all Mozambicans and signalled a willingness to engage in dialogue with those who are contesting the election results.
Chapo addressed the protests led by Venâncio Mondlane, the runner-up in the October 9 elections, backed by the PODEMOS party, who has spearheaded demonstrations against the outcome. Despite the tension, Chapo expressed openness to discussion: "I will be the President of all Mozambicans. We will establish a government that embraces dialogue, even with those protesting. Street protests won’t develop Mozambique," he said.
Reflecting on the election process, Chapo acknowledged both positive and challenging lessons and reiterated his pledge to serve all citizens, regardless of their political, regional, or religious affiliations. "We will work to ensure equal opportunities for all Mozambicans, no matter where they are," he promised.
The newly elected President condemned the recent post-election violence, including the killings of opposition figures Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe, calling for swift investigations to bring those responsible to justice. "This is not the Mozambique we want for our children and future generations. FRELIMO is a party of peace, national unity, and sovereignty. Without peace and security, there can be no development," he emphasised.
Chapo thanked the Mozambican people for their trust and expressed deep appreciation for FRELIMO’s role in his victory. "This election was won by FRELIMO’s machinery and the dedication of the comrades," he highlighted, acknowledging the collective effort behind his success.
President Filipe Nyusi, who attended the event, also noted that FRELIMO's victory was the result of the hard work and commitment of all its members and underscored the need to remain focused on Mozambique's ongoing development.
