Daniel Chapo confirmed as winner of the presidential elections
The National Election Commission (CNE) officially confirmed this afternoon that Daniel Francisco Chapo, the candidate of the Frelimo party, secured a resounding victory in the October 9 general elections, obtaining 4,912,772 votes, which accounts for 70.67% of the total.
The results were announced by the president of the CNE, Dom Carlos Matsinhe, amid ongoing protests across several provinces, largely involving young people who are contesting the electoral outcomes. The demonstrations were organized by opposition forces that reject the results put forth by the electoral administration bodies.
According to the CNE, Venâncio Mondlane, who has been the most vocal critic of the results, came in second place with 1,412,517 votes, representing 20.32% of the vote.
In third place is Ossufo Momade, the leader of Renamo, who had until now led the second-largest political force in the country. Momade garnered 413,591 votes, equating to 5.81%, a result that places him in an uncomfortable position, as Renamo has now lost its status as the second-most voted party. In the legislative elections, that position was taken by the PODEMOS party, which backed Venâncio Mondlane’s candidacy.
Lutero Simango, representing the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), finished in fourth place, receiving 223,066 votes, which corresponds to 3.2% of the total vote.
The results announced today will now be submitted to the Constitutional Council for validation, the body responsible for officially proclaiming the winner.
