Venâncio evokes Eduardo Mondlane in Cuamba
PODEMOS presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane intensified his campaign for the general elections in Cuamba district, Niassa province. Reflecting on Victory Day, Mondlane highlighted the importance of the celebration and praised the figure of Eduardo Mondlane, the architect of national unity.
“What happened today is what, in 1960, when a young man left the United States, left behind wealth, a good salary, a nice house, privileges, abandoned it all, and came to Mozambique to fight for the Mozambican people. That young man was called Eduardo Mondlane,” the PODEMOS candidate recalled.
Venâncio Mondlane’s presidential campaign in the city of Cuamba coincided with the Victory Day celebrations.
“Those who are governing Mozambique today didn’t want this country to belong to Eduardo Mondlane, and that’s why they killed him, because they wanted Mozambique to be a disaster. But they forgot that a young Mondlane would be born to continue Eduardo Mondlane’s legacy. Killing a man is not killing a cause,” Mondlane declared.
During the march, Mondlane emphasized the role of the iconic leader of the largest opposition party, Afonso Dhlakama, who always fought alongside the people. According to Mondlane, “When he died, some applauded, thinking those defending the people were gone. But they forget that I was baptized to continue the fight.”
The PODEMOS candidate also voiced complaints about police harassment and persecution of party members and supporters. “The same police who pointed guns at us are the ones who have three months of unpaid wages and sometimes borrow money just to afford transportation to work,” Mondlane stated.
In the same event, Venâncio Mondlane expressed his support for the military fighting terrorism in Cabo Delgado. He stressed that the soldiers are fighting under inadequate conditions, lacking sufficient ammunition and food, with some dying without their families knowing of their fate. Additionally, he alleged that subsidies meant for the military were diverted to fund the campaign of another party.
Mondlane also commended the work of doctors, who, regardless of whether they receive their wages, continue to work tirelessly.
