Former president Chissano condemns brutal violence against Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe
Former Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano, through his foundation, has vehemently condemned the brutal murders of Elvino Dias, the lawyer for presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, and Paulo Guambe, political delegate for the PODEMOS party, which occurred on Saturday night in Maputo.
In a press statement released today, the Joaquim Chissano Foundation described the crime as heinous and an act of brutal violence that tarnishes the image of Mozambique. “We strongly condemn this and other heinous crimes that contribute to creating a sense of insecurity and undermine the will to fight for the well-being of Mozambicans,” the statement reads.
Chissano emphasized that the deaths of Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe represent an attack on human life, something unacceptable and contrary to the principles of dignity, respect, and justice that should prevail in Mozambican society. The former president urged authorities to intensify efforts to swiftly clarify the crime and ensure that those responsible are held accountable with appropriate severity.
The foundation’s statement comes 48 hours after the tragic incident, during a time when messages of support for the victims’ families and condemnation of the act have been pouring in.
The remains of Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe will be buried between Tuesday and Wednesday in Maputo and Inhambane province.
