Nyusi extends invitation to Mondlane, who accepts with conditions

Venâncio Mondlane, the runner-up in Mozambique’s 2024 presidential elections, announced today that he has accepted President Filipe Nyusi’s invitation to participate in a dialogue meeting with the four presidential candidates. However, Mondlane conditioned his participation on the prior establishment of an agenda for the debate.

In a live broadcast on his Facebook page, Mondlane, currently in a somewhat uncertain position, stated that he would submit a letter to the President’s office tomorrow morning. The document will outline a list of priority issues to be discussed, aiming to address the causes of the post-electoral crisis and to further the pacification of the country.

Mondlane revealed that he had received around 40,000 communications over the past week, from both Mozambican and foreign citizens, offering suggestions on how to continue the fight for electoral justice. After reviewing and harmonizing these proposals, he created a list of issues he considers essential for the dialogue.

“It makes no sense to attend a meeting without a clear agenda. It is necessary that the points to be discussed are defined in advance,” Mondlane emphasized, explaining his decision to propose the topics for the discussion.

The invitation for dialogue was reaffirmed yesterday by President Nyusi, who confirmed that formal invitations had already been sent to the candidates. Nyusi underscored the importance of the meeting as a critical step in resolving the political and social crisis that has plagued Mozambique since the post-election protests.

The dialogue is widely anticipated as a crucial opportunity to achieve stability and restore normalcy to the country.
