Renamo condemns police violence in Nampula and Quelimane protests
Renamo spokesperson Marcial Macome held a press conference today, strongly condemning police actions during recent protests in the cities of Nampula and Quelimane. Macome accused the police of killing civilians in Nampula’s Namicopo neighborhood during demonstrations held yesterday.
Renamo also criticized police conduct in Quelimane, where tear gas was deployed against a peaceful march led by the city’s mayor, Manuel de Araújo. Macome described the incidents as a “severe violation” and condemned the impact on “the elderly, children, pregnant women, and those requiring special care,” whom he claimed were affected by the police response.
Macome argued that the killings and police repression represent an attempt to block peaceful protests. “By preventing peaceful demonstrations, the government is fanning the flames of a potential revolution,” he warned, underscoring that Renamo supports peace and unity but cannot accept what he termed the “massacre” of citizens protesting peacefully.
He called on the government, emphasizing that “there is no historical record of weapons silencing the will of the people.” Macome insisted that the police must be held accountable for their actions, warning that the force should serve the broader society, rather than the interests of any specific political party.
