Disappointing reception: Venâncio Mondlane arrives in Lisbon with few supporters
Expectations were high, judging by the crowds that the Democratic Alliance Coalition (CAD) and its presidential candidate, Venâncio Mondlane, hoped to mobilize.
Venâncio Mondlane arrived in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, on Monday night at around 9:45 PM, on a trip primarily aimed at promoting his electoral manifesto for the general elections on October 9th.
Upon disembarking at Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon, Mondlane was greeted by a group of supporters significantly smaller than expected, although he described the reception as warm.
According to TORRE.News, among the few supporters who came to the airport to welcome the CAD presidential candidate, some were Mozambicans, while others came from various European countries and other nationalities.
“I didn’t expect this (...) the reception was warm. I was pleased,” said Venâncio Mondlane, quoted by a local publication as his first words upon arriving in Lisbon.
The CAD, whose candidacy was rejected by the National Election Commission (CNE), submitted an appeal to the Constitutional Council (CC) yesterday (22), contesting the CNE's decision. The party's lawyer stated that if the CC does not uphold the appeal, “it will be undeniable proof of the ineffectiveness of the country's laws.”
