Maputo Central Hospital confirms three deaths amid protests
Maputo Central Hospital (HCM), Mozambique’s largest healthcare facility, has confirmed three fatalities resulting from the protests that took place yesterday in Maputo and surrounding areas. The figures were provided by Dino Lopéz, head of the HCM Emergency Department, during a press conference held to update the public on the situation following the unrest in the capital.
According to hospital reports, HCM received a total of 138 patients yesterday. Of these, the Emergency Department admitted eight cases, Gynaecology handled 29, and the Adult Emergency Unit treated 101 patients. Out of this group, 66 patients were confirmed to have injuries related to the protests, with three recorded fatalities, stated the HCM representative.
Lopéz further detailed that 56 of these patients suffered gunshot wounds reportedly inflicted by police, while four were injured from falls, and three sustained injuries from physical assault.
Given the current national context, HCM has implemented a contingency plan to ensure additional healthcare staff are available if needed, especially to address any shortage of personnel.
“We were able to attend to all cases that arrived at the hospital, and we acknowledge the dedication of our colleagues, some of whom have been working 24 to 48-hour shifts, or even up to 72 hours, giving their all for a better country,” said Lopéz.
He also highlighted the support from medical students from Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) and ISCTEM, who have been assisting in handling the increased demand for healthcare services.
