Nyusi meets with Mondlane’s spiritual mentor amid post-election tensions
Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi met today with Apostle Luís Fole, leader of the Divine Hope Ministry Church and known spiritual mentor of presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, who has been contesting the recent general election results. The meeting took place in Nyusi’s office against the backdrop of escalating post-election tensions, marked by demonstrations organised by Mondlane.
Nyusi shared news of the meeting on his official Facebook page, describing it as an opportunity to exchange views on the country’s current situation. “Compatriots, this morning I held a courtesy meeting with Apostle Luís Fole of the Divine Hope Ministry Church, where we shared perspectives on the nation’s state,” Nyusi wrote, emphasising the government’s commitment to work inclusively for stability and national development.
Fole’s Divine Hope Ministry has gained prominence in Maputo, and it was Fole himself who introduced Mondlane as a pastor to the congregation, supporting his early steps into religious life. Fole is also a follower of Nigerian prophet Joshua Iguila, who reportedly prophesied Mondlane’s leadership, a vision that, according to multiple sources, has influenced Mondlane’s stance in rejecting the election results, seeing his defeat as a deviation from prophecy.
The situation in Mozambique has prompted calls for dialogue to prevent further escalation of violence. Yaqub Sibindy, leader of the Independent Party of Mozambique (PIMO), urged Mondlane to halt the protests, arguing that they cause significant social disruption. Sibindy stated that protesting is premature, as the final election results are still awaiting Constitutional Council approval. “These demonstrations only add to instability and do not offer solutions to the issues at hand,” said Sibindy.
