Voter Registration/ Accreditation Of Political Supervisors Under Way

The spokesperson for Mozambique’s Electoral Administration Technical Secretariat (STAE), Regina Matsinhe, on Thursday guaranteed that the accreditation of supervisors indicated by political parties to supervise the voter registration ahead of the 11 October municipal elections is under way throughout the country.

The voter registration will take place from April 20th to June 3rd, in all districts that contain municipalities.

According to Matsinhe, cited in Friday’s issue of the Maputo daily “Notícias”, the parties’ monitors interested in following the registration must be accredited by 16 April, four days before the beginning of the registration of potential voters.

“The necessary material is already in the country with the arrival, on Tuesday, of the last batch of about 500 mobile IDs (the computers used for registration), solar panels, and PVC voter cards”, she said, adding that the equipment received will be distributed to the provinces.

“It is guaranteed that all districts with municipalities can carry out the registration without limitations”, Matsinhe stressed.

This is wildly optimistic, since there are serious doubts as to whether it will be possible to register voters in the municipality of Mocimboa da Praia in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, due to security concerns.

Mocimboa da Praia is one of the districts worst affected by jihadist terrorism, and much of the population displaced by the conflict has yet to return.
