General elections 2024: Ossufo Momade pledges to end subsistence farming in the country
Ossufo Momade, president of Renamo, the largest opposition party in Mozambique, assured that he will eliminate subsistence farming in all districts of the country and promote a mechanized and modern agricultural sector.
Speaking during a rally on Tuesday (06) in the administrative post of Dombe, Sussundenga district, central province of Manica, Momade challenged citizens to take agriculture more seriously and responsibly to end hunger in the country.
The Renamo leader has been on a pre-campaign tour since mid-July, leading up to the official campaign launch on the 24th of this month, with the campaign itself starting on the 26th.
“The first thing we want to do in Mozambique is to build a hunger-free Mozambique. We want a rich, developed Mozambique through agriculture,” he said.
According to Momade, if he wins the elections, he will distribute tractors to farmers as a way to promote mechanized agriculture and thus refinance a cycle of production and productivity.
The Renamo president criticized the state of the Dombe market, saying it needs a deep transformation to achieve proper sanitation.
“Daily, the vendors pay space occupation fees, but that money is not used to improve the market,” Momade said. “You are forced to pay fees here daily to the government. And what have they done? There’s no paving here. Each trader built their own stall. Is the government's role only to collect money and pocket it?” he questioned.
Momade is running for the presidential elections, supported by Renamo.
The elections, including legislative and governor races, are scheduled for October 9.
