Venâncio Mondlane pauses campaign for unexpected trip to South Africa
Venâncio Mondlane, the presidential candidate for the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (PODEMOS), has unexpectedly left the electoral campaign just on its second day, heading to neighboring South Africa.
According to information provided to TORRE.News by a well-placed source, little is known about the objectives and agenda of this trip, but it is speculated that Mondlane might be seeking financial support from the diaspora.
The timing of this trip, occurring at such a crucial moment in the campaign, has raised eyebrows, considering the importance of maintaining a constant presence on the ground during the electoral period.
While Mondlane is out of the country, PODEMOS’s campaign continues with a door-to-door approach, with no set date for his return to Mozambique.
PODEMOS, the party backing Mondlane, received less than 10 million meticais from the budget allocated by the National Election Commission (CNE), an amount considered insufficient to cover the expenses of a presidential campaign.
The party was allocated around 3.2 million meticais for the Assembly of the Republic campaign and just over 5.1 million meticais for the municipal assemblies, totaling a budget of just over 8 million meticais.
This financial limitation is cited as one of the factors that may have prompted Mondlane's trip in search of external support.
Meanwhile, other candidates, such as Daniel Chapo of FRELIMO, continue their electoral campaigns, focusing on promoting unity between the people and the government with the aim of building a stronger and more prosperous Mozambique.
Lutero Simango of the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM) also launched his campaign in Beira, a city considered an MDM stronghold.
At the same time, the leader of Renamo and presidential candidate, Ossufo Momade, remains absent from the campaign, and the reasons behind his disappearance are still being investigated by TORRE.News.
